Three Phases of Chiropractic Care

Phase One: Acute Care Phase

Patients in need of this phase of care are suffering from aches, pains or some other apparent symptoms. Office visits during this phase of care are generally more frequent. Treatment may consist of chiropractic manipulation (adjusting) and other modalities such as heat or ice to help relieve discomfort and pain. The frequency of visits during this phase are influenced by several factors, such as age, severity of condition, and lifestyle. Depending on the severity of your condition, repeated visits over the course of weeks or months may be necessary to reduce or eliminate our symptoms.

During Phase One, frequent visits are needed to help the patient deal with pain and begin the healing process.

Phase Two: Corrective Care Phase

Many patients discontinue care as soon as the pain or other symptoms subside. They do not realize that although the pain or other symptoms are gone, the muscles and other soft tissues can remain damaged well after the original symptoms have improved.  During the Corrective Care Phase, visit frequency is reduced in combination with the addition of exercise and other self-care measures. With symptoms gone, the body can continue to heal. Stopping care now increases the chance for relapse and further problems later in life.

Just like an orthodontist uses corrective care to straighten a patient’s teeth, the chiropractor uses corrective care to help restore proper position and function of the musculoskeletal system.

Phase Three: Wellness Care Phase

This is the maintenance and prevention phase of care. Many patients opt to continue periodic treatment once they have been determined to have reached maximum improvement. Periodic chiropractic “check-ups” help to find and correct new problems before they become serious, allowing the patient to continue enjoying optimal health. These preventative measures can save time and money.

Wellness care helps to detect problems before they become serious, much like having a mechanic do maintenance on your car.
